Places of Interest
THE WORLD-FAMOUS GRACE BAY BEACH is located on the northeast coast of the island of Providenciales. This pristine beach is the hallmark of the Turks and Caicos Islands, and the recipient of many designations, awards, and accolades.
Grace Bay currently holds the position of World Travel Awards’ World’s Leading Beach Destination, and 2nd place in Trip Advisor’s World’s Best Beaches. Over the previous decade, Grace Bay has taken first or second place in these two competitions 19 times.
The entirety of Grace Bay is excellent and breathtaking, with clean turquoise water and soft white sand, and no rocks, seaweed, or pollution. An extensive barrier reef is located about a mile (1.6 km) offshore, and protects Grace Bay from the ocean swells of the Atlantic, which helps to keep the water at the beach calm and safe.
Grace Bay Beach is home to nearly all of the large and luxury resorts on Providenciales, and much of the boat and water sports traffic that takes place near Providenciales occurs in the shallow waters between the beach and barrier reef.
A fine example of the typical British-Bermudian style architecture you will see a lot on the islands. A modest white stone building with red wooden features, it is the oldest of its kind on the islands and dates to 1823.
These ruins are some of the best-preserved on the island and an important cultural heritage site for the islands.
A small colonial prison on the island where you can take self-guided tours; there is quite a lot of history to take in with the prison being in use from the 1830s until 1994.
Set overlooking the reef on Grand Turk Island. This 60-foot-tall iron structure is a great location for whale watching in February and March.
A great spot for kiteboarding where Grace Bay Beach has been voted one of the best beaches in the world and is also close to the beautiful reefs at Bight Beach.
An incredibly beautiful natural lagoon dotted with rocky islands. Most of the water is quite shallow and it is a popular spot for paddleboarding and kayaking, it is also easy to reach.
An easily accessible mangrove island to the northwest of Providenciales that is also a great spot to explore with a kayak or paddleboard.
Especially impressive during a higher-than-usual ocean swell, this is a great place to explore, beachcomb, and birdwatch. Snorkeling is excellent during calm conditions. The nicest coastline and wetlands are found west of the light tower up the beach. This area has a greater than normal crime risk due to the isolation.
West Harbour Bluff is a very beautiful area with many interesting features. However, the isolated location, poor conditions of the access roads, and associated crime risk should be considered. High-clearance vehicles are advised.
Although some of the reefs here can be a little difficult to find, this is the best easily-accessible snorkeling spot on Providenciales. The most impressive reef can be found in the deeper water off the point between the west and central access. Be aware of boats in the area if you stray away from the reefs.
Flamingo Creek Bay and the Frenchman’s Creek and Pigeon Pond Nature Reserve is one of the finest areas on Providenciales for birdwatching. A tidal creek runs parallel with the beach behind the coastal dune, and as the area’s name suggests, flamingos and other large wading birds can often be seen in the waterway.
A naturally formed limestone sinkhole located in the Long Bay Hills area of Providenciales.
This feature has a diameter of roughly 50 feet (15 m), and a depth of about 60 feet (18 m) to the brackish water below. The depth continues below the water surface for around 25 feet (8 m) under the northern side of the hole. It’s highly likely that the depth at one point in history was much greater than it is today.
The verdant North Caicos is considered the Garden Island of the archipelago, and definitely is the greenest. The island is the perfect escape for the adventurous traveler, with beautiful wetlands, deserted beaches, and interesting historical sites.
